As Eurostar celebrates its 30th birthday, here’s how the luxurious experience it offers passengers is getting even better in 2025.

Since its inception in 1994, Eurostar has transformed travel between the UK and mainland Europe, offering efficient high-speed connections with a number of key destinations in mainland Europe.

Now, it’s celebrating an impressive 30 years of seamless cross-channel travel – a major milestone that is worthy of much fanfare considering just how much it has changed the game – with the anniversary marked in November of last year.

Best-known for its cross-channel routes, which link the UK with France and Belgium via the Channel Tunnel, the service’s trains travel at top speeds of 300 km/h, making them a favourable choice for those eager to avoid busy airports and long waits for flight check-ins – and a more sustainable choice than short-haul flights, too.

Add to that the extra baggage allowance of two suitcases and one piece of hand luggage per person – with no weight restrictions and no extra charge – and it’s certainly a less stressful way to travel.

Check-in is fast and convenient, with a dedicated service for Premier passengers, and there’s plenty of space on board to relax and unwind or get some work done – plus, on arrival at the final destination, there’s no need to navigate any queues or baggage reclaims.

But beyond that, the level of comfort afforded to Eurostar customers from the moment they set foot on board has seen it carve out a reputation as a more luxurious way to travel, providing an experience that’s about more than simply getting from A to B and places a focus on enjoying the journey just as much as the destination.

Today, it’s hard to imagine a time before Eurostar, but back when it launched in the 90s, linking the UK with Paris and Brussels, it was a pioneering venture that garnered significant media attention for all the right reasons.

The concept of being able to travel between the UK and mainland Europe was exciting in itself, and Eurostar’s promise of quick, comfortable and efficient services got both leisure and business travellers talking and eager to try it out for themselves.

Over the three decades since then, Eurostar has evolved to offer services linking the UK to various other European cities including Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Lyon and Marseille in France. Today, its seamless integration into the European rail network and an increasingly high-end service have made it the preferred choice for affluent travellers moving between all connected destinations.

More than 380 million passengers in total have travelled on its routes since 1994

While Eurostar’s 30th anniversary brings plenty to celebrate in itself, it has reached an array of other milestones in that time, with the number of passengers growing from three million in its first year to more than 18 million in 2024.

More than 380 million passengers in total have travelled on its routes since 1994 – and have done so in the utmost style. Eurostar is known for offering journeys that are steeped in luxury, and with 61 million dishes served in its Standard, Plus, Premier services, along with an impressive five million glasses of Champagne over the past 30 years, it’s easy to see why it remains the favoured way to travel amongst an affluent clientele.

“For the past 30 years, Eurostar has been at the forefront of high-speed rail, revolutionising the way people travel between the UK and the continent,” said Gwendoline Cazenave, CEO of Eurostar.

“As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we reflect on our Merger with Thalys that we’re now connecting customers to France, The Netherlands, Brussels and Germany. Our success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team across Europe.”

The finest in luxury travel

Eurostar lounge

Eurostar has always offered a comfortable experience, but over the years it has significantly upgraded its premium services to offer a meticulously curated first-class experience

Eurostar has always offered a comfortable experience, but over the years it has significantly upgraded its premium services to offer a meticulously curated first-class experience.

Its Eurostar Premier service offers passengers priority boarding, flexible ticket conditions and dedicated lounges, making the transition as smooth as possible between the beginning, middle and end of journeys and ensuring maximum convenience and a relaxing experience throughout. Seats are plush, ergonomically designed and offer plenty of legroom, and the lighting on board has been fine-tuned to ensure a calming and refined ambience on board.

But it’s the dining options that really shine. Passengers have always been treated to mouth-watering gourmet meals during their journeys, selected from menus carefully curated by top chefs.

But in October last year, after a decade of French inspired dining, Eurostar’s gastronomic offering was given a revolutionary overhaul as Michelin-starred chef Jéremy Chan and Jessica Préalpato – named World’s Best Pastry Chef in 2019 – along with natural wine connoisseur Honey Spencer joined the Eurostar family.

The new menus are based around fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from countries across the Eurostar network, and created with sustainability in mind and are part of Eurostar’s newly launched service classes, which include Eurostar Standard, Eurostar Plus and Eurostar Premier.

Cazenave says: “By reinventing the onboard culinary experience, making it more innovative, daring, and environmentally friendly, Eurostar is presenting itself as a destination in its own right.

Our new gastronomic offer aims to transform each journey into a unique experience, where the indulgence begins as soon as you board, making the new Eurostar a reality for our customers. Eurostar is more than just a train: it’s a promise of new discoveries and unique moments. Our new chefs bring this vision to life and we’re delighted to work with them on this journey.”

Premier passengers can expect to experience the very finest in on-board dining, with a four-course meal served in their seat from the newly upgraded menu – and with both chefs known for their bold flavour combinations, you can be sure of being in for a treat.

The conscious traveller will be pleased to know that Eurostar has been awarded the highest possible rating of three stars from the Sustainable Restaurant Association Sustainable (SRA) for its commitment to sourcing local and sustainably produced ingredients and for pursuing a socially and environmentally responsible approach.

Looking ahead

Eurostar has always been known for innovation, and moving into 2025, it’s clear that it has now plans to slow down on that front anytime soon

Eurostar has always been known for innovation, and moving into 2025, it’s clear that it has now plans to slow down on that front anytime soon. Forever striving to offer passengers the best possible experience, in September of last year it announced it was partnering with SkyTeam, the global airline alliance, to pave the way for seamless and integrated intermodal journeys via air and rail for its customers.

Although many customers choose Eurostar in part because it’s a more sustainable way to travel, for those embarking on longer journeys it isn’t always possible to complete the entire route overland, and the partnership aims to facilitate smoother travel on itineraries that combine long- and medium-haul flights with sustainable rail journeys in just one booking. It’s a move that is set to remove yet more stress from the process of organising travel, and will also mean that passengers can enjoy an array of SkyTeam benefits along the way.

Cazenave explains: “Offering travellers the choice to see Europe in the most sustainable and convenient way by rail is a key component of Eurostar’s vision for growth.

“We are creating a future where travellers can connect between Eurostar trains, domestic railways and long haul flying, opening up our services to new markets across the globe.

“Today is a major step forward towards this mission and we look forward to working with SkyTeam to develop the customer proposition so more travellers can experience Eurostar’s unique service.”

Patrick Roux, SkyTeam CEO, adds: “Working with Eurostar as our first non-airline partner underscores SkyTeam’s commitment to delivering a more integrated and responsible travel experience by incorporating intermodal travel.

“One of the world’s most-loved train operators, with a reputation for customer service, Eurostar is a natural fit for SkyTeam. I look forward to developing our partnership and offering customers greater choice in how they travel across SkyTeam’s global network.”
