Flight Route: UA839 Los Angeles(LAX) to Sydney (SYD)
Departure Time: 11.30pm
Class: Business / Seat 1D
Flight time: 15hrs
The Lounge
After a jam-packed four days in LA, I arrived at LAX way before the required time after hearing about lengthy security checks and delays. I was pleasantly surprised at how seamless the process was as I was checked in and went through security in under half an hour.
The directions to the Polaris Lounge were well-signposted, and I was there in no time.
The lounge was vast and opened up to a welcoming bar area with plenty of seating around it, or you could choose the comfy lounge chairs. As I ventured through the lounge, I passed an impressive wine wall and expansive food station.
You could eat buffet-style or in the dining room with a different menu. There was plenty of room, so I decided on the prawn entrée with a main of chicken tikka paired with lovely malbec while catching up on some reading.
Some other noteworthy features were the quiet suite (pictured below right), where guests can go for a nap before their flight, and the shower suites where you can freshen up before embarking on your trip.
Time flies when you are having a good time and before I knew it, I was in the business class cabin. The flight was overnight and my seat was 1D on the centre aisle. The screen in between the seats afforded plenty of privacy if required.
The seat was comfortable with a lie-flat bed easily converted with an easy-to-use control. My favourite part was the Saks Fifth Avenue comforter, which was lush and one I would like to have at home.
The amenities pack had all the basics with a UA-branded eyemask, toothbrush, toothpaste, earplugs, socks, and a pen.
The Food and Service
The food service for the overnight flight was dinner and breakfast before arrival. The dinner menu catered for a variety of tastes and I opted for pan-seared salmon with couscous and asparagus.
While waiting for my cheese plate (which included gouda, gruyère, grapes, and crackers), I changed into my Polaris PJs and slippers then got ready for a movie before catching a few hours of sleep.
The service was great and the team were very friendly and quick to respond.
Wi-Fi is available for purchase and you can also download the United Airlines app to keep track of bookings, check-in, and keep up to date on changes to flights.
United Airlines have launched direct flights from Melbourne to LA with a three-times-weekly service, which is set to increase to a daily service from 3 December 2022.
MEL-LAX will be added to the daily MEL-SFO service, giving customers in Melbourne more flight options to and from the U.S.
